Internet2 and SEGP

Internet2 is a non-profit membership organization of 208 universities working in conjunction with government and industry to operate a private national Internet Protocol (IP) network reserved for the exclusive use of the U.S. research and education (R&E) community. The Internet2 network is an advanced, high-performance network that supports advanced or complex applications that do not work on the commercial Internet or do not work well. As the national R&E backbone, the Internet2 Network provides connectivity between institutions and connectivity to international research and education networks thereby providing access to the global research and education community.

Through Internet2 membership, our community focuses on developing and deploying advanced networking technologies and capabilities in service of U.S. research and higher education. Internet2 members represent a wide range of research and academic disciplines from over 300 member institutions, including leading U.S. universities, corporations, government research agencies, and not-for-profit networking organizations.

You can find lists of the University members on Internet2 by going to http://members.internet2.edu/university/universities.cfm

Arkansas Internet2 member institutions include:

• Arkansas State University, Jonesboro
• University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
• University of Arkansas at Little Rock

The Internet2 Sponsored Education Group Participants (SEGP) program is intended to allow expanded access to the Internet2 Network for state and regional education networks, through sponsorship by Internet2 university members. State and regional networks may include nonprofit and for-profit K-20 educational institutions, museums, libraries, art galleries, or hospitals that require routine collaboration on instructional, clinical and/or research projects, services and content with Internet2 members or with other sponsored participants.

There are 38 SEGP states. You can find a current list and map of the SEGP states at http://www.internet2.edu/network/participants/listSEGP.cfm and http://www.internet2.edu/info/segps.pdf
