Workshop Synopsis:

Build an incident response plan for your institution.  The Incident Response Planning Workshop is based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800 framework for managing computer security incidents.  Attendees will learn the format of an IR plan, how to determine a reportable incident, roles of a response team and more.  Participants will leave the workshop with a drafted incident response plan.  This workshop is suitable for any AREON member institution.  Seating is limited, so get your registration in early!

Dr. William J. (Joe) Adams

Dr. Adams joined Merit Network after retiring from a 26-year career in the United States Army with the rank of Colonel.  He taught at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) as an associate professor and was responsible for USMA's cyberdefense course.  As the chief information officer of the National Defense University, Joe build an information assurance program that was recognized by the commanding general of the Defense Information Systems Agency in 2010. In his current position, Joe is focused on leading and expanding Merit's network research and cybersecurity programs.  He is the director of the Michigan Cyber Range, an internationally recognized platform for education, exercises and testing in cybersecurity.

Dr. Adams earned a B.Sc. in computer engineering from Syracuse University and a M.Sc. in computer systems engineering from the University of Arkansas. He earned his Ph.D. in computer engineering from Virginia Tech, where his research focused on network security and access control in mobile ad-hoc networks. He also holds a master's of strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.

We welcome Dr. Adams back to Arkansas for this workshop, the second he has done for the AREON community.  He conducted the Cyber Security Executive Workshop for the AREON 2017 Annual Conference, providing a broad look at the threat landscape that companies and institutions face today.

Target Audience:

This workshop is tailored for anyone responsible for or wanting to learn more about producing an organization's incident response plan.  This could include CISOs, CIOs, security analysts, network managers, emergency managers, system administrators, police personnel or other IT administrators.
